RB D'Onta Foreman was named Offensive Player of the Week and QB Shane Buechele earned Newcomer of the Week
IRVING, Texas - A pair of Texas Longhorns were honored by the Big 12 Conference on Monday, as RB D'Onta Foreman earned Offensive Player of the Week and QB Shane Buechele was named Newcomer of the Week. The duo is honored on the heels of the Longhorns' 35-34 victory over previously-unbeaten Baylor Saturday at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. For Foreman, it is his first career weekly award while Buechele earns his third Newcomer of the Week award this season.
A junior running back from Texas City, Texas, Foreman rushed 32 times for 250 yards (7.8 ypc) and two touchdowns on Saturday against No. 8/6 Baylor. His 32 attempts and 250 yards were both career highs. In the game, he became the first player since Jamaal Charles in 2007 to surpass 1,000 yards rushing on the season. He now has 1,105 rushing yards in 2016. His 250 yards in the game were the second-most in school history against an AP ranked team. Ricky Williams had 259 yards against Texas A&M in 1998.
Foreman now has rushed for 100 yards in nine straight games, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision. That streak is the second longest in school history behind Earl Campbell's streak of 11 in 1977. He secured his ninth straight 100-yard game early on Saturday, reaching the century mark in the first quarter. He is one of just three players to reach the 100-yard mark in the first quarter this season, joining Louisville's Lamar Jackson and Florida State's Dalvin Cook.
A true freshman quarterback from Arlington, Texas, Buechele passed for 291 yards in Texas' win over No. 8/6 Baylor Saturday. He also added two touchdowns and averaged 24.3 yards per completion. Saturday's game was his seventh 200-yard performance of the season. Prior to this year, UT true freshmen quarterbacks had combined for one 200-yard passing performance ever.
Buechele has now passed for 2,013 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. Both those marks are a school record for a true freshman QB. He reached the 2,000-yard mark in just eight games, tied with Colt McCoy and Major Applewhite as the second-fastest to ever do so in UT history. His 17 TD passes this season are the third-most ever by a UT freshman QB and are tied for the 13th-most for a career in school history. Buechele has now made eight starts this season, tied with Bobby Layne (1944) for the most ever by a true freshman QB in school history. His four victories are just one shy of Layne's school-record of five.
Foreman, Buechele and the Longhorns will travel to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech Saturday. Kickoff from Jones AT&T Stadium is set for 11 a.m. on Fox Sports 1.
