LOS ANGELES — University of Texas freshman forward Jarrett Allen has been named to the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's Preseason Top 50 on Tuesday. Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for college basketball's most prestigious individual honor.
The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2017 John R. Wooden Award will be announced during the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's on Friday, April 7, 2017.
Through his first two collegiate contests, Allen is tied for the team lead in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and ranks third on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) while hitting 11-of-16 (.688) field goals and adding four blocked shots in 30.0 minutes per game. He previously was named to the Naismith Trophy Men's 50 preseason watch list and the 20-person watch list for the 2017 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award, honoring the top center in men's college basketball.
No. 23/21 Texas (2-0) returns to action when it hosts Eastern Washington (1-1) in the Legends Classic Austin Regional Round on Thursday, Nov. 17. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
