Texas freshmen Christian Sigsgaard and Yuya Ito score first-round consolation bracket victories Friday afternoon in New York.
FLUSHING, N.Y. – Texas freshmen Christian Sigsgaard and Yuya Ito scored individual singles wins in the opening round of the consolation singles draw Friday afternoon on day two of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
"We bounced back today," said UT head coach Michael Center. "Any time you play in this field, you know your guys will get a chance to play against some really great competition, and they responded today. Christian and Yuya came back out, played hard and got some wins today. The exciting thing is they get to play again tomorrow against two more very good players."
Sigsgaard opened the first round of consolation play against Memphis' 57th-ranked Ryan Peniston. Sigsgaard won the first set handily, 6-1 and held on for a 7-5 second-set win to preserve the match victory. The newcomer from Denmark will take on Florida's Alfredo Perez in the second round of the consolation draw on Saturday.
Ito engaged in a lengthy battle with North Carolina's Ronnie Schneider, and the Texas freshman outlasted the 10th-ranked Tar Heel in three sets. Ito won a competitive first-set tiebreaker, 9-7 before surrendering the second set, 6-1. Ito finished off the final set, 6-3 to set up a second-round consolation match Saturday against Duke's Nicolas Alvarez.
