Longhorns win the doubles point and post four singles wins over the Quakers.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 32 Texas (6-4) won the doubles point and toughed out four singles wins in a 5-2 victory over Pennsylvania Thursday afternoon at UT's Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
The Longhorns won two of the three doubles contests to claim the doubles point and a 1-0 match lead. UT's 13th-ranked doubles duo of Breaunna Addison and Dani Wagland knocked off its third straight ranked opponent, as the Texas tandem prevailed by a 6-4 count over the 67th-ranked duo of Kana Daniel and Sonya Latycheva at first doubles.
Penn answered with a win at third doubles, but UT's Neda Koprcina and Daniella Roldan held on for a 7-5 win over Marta Kowalska and Ria Vaidya at second doubles to close out the doubles point.
Wagland made short work of Penn's Latycheva and notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles to push the Texas lead to 2-0. At second singles, UT's Koprcina took the first set from Penn's Vaidya, who went on to challenge for a second-set win. Koprcina held off Vaidya in a second-set tiebreaker to stake Texas to a 3-0 lead.
UT freshman Katie Poluta split her first two sets with Penn's Lina Qostal at fourth singles. Poluta broke Qostal's serve midway through the final set, which she won 6-2 to clinch the Texas victory.
Penn closed out three-set wins at the sixth and fifth positions before Addison tacked on a three-set win over the Quakers' Daniel at the first slot to finish off the 5-2 Texas win.
Texas welcomes another Ivy League opponent for its next match as it hosts Princeton on Tuesday (March 15) at the Whitaker Tennis Courts.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
There's no question that our group is a bit depleted, but we're not going to make excuses. We knew going into this match it was going to be a bit of a dogfight today. I truly have very mixed feelings about it. I will credit the team with gutting it out. At the same time, in many of the other matches, there was some discouraging tennis. Hopefully everyone can get healthy and we can fix it and turn it around because we're 10 days from starting conference play. Certainly, we'll need to perform better.
