Longhorns post second win over Princeton in a month, open conference play this weekend.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 32 Texas (7-4) picked up the doubles point and posted four singles victories in a 5-2 win over Princeton (6-7) Tuesday afternoon at UT's Whitaker Tennis Courts. The Longhorns knocked off the Tigers for the second time in about three weeks after winning by a 4-2 count at the Blue-Gray Classic in February.
Texas registered doubles wins at the first and second positions to lock up the doubles point and a 1-0 match lead. UT's 13th-ranked doubles tandem featuring All-America senior Breaunna Addison and sophomore Dani Wagland shut out Princeton's Amanda Muliawan and Dorothy Tang by a 6-0 count at first doubles.
The Longhorns nailed down the doubles point at the second position, where junior Neda Koprcina and freshman Daniella Roldan finished off a 6-2 win over Katrine Steffensen and Emily Hahn.
Princeton evened the match with a win at fifth singles, but Texas claimed the next four singles decisions to clinch the team win. UT senior Lana Groenvynck notched a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hahn at sixth singles. Addison scored her 25th singles win of the year and the 97th victory of her career, as she dealt Muliawan a 6-1, 6-2 defeat at first singles.
Freshman Katie Poluta clinched the Texas team win by way of her 6-4, 6-1 win over Nicole Kalhorn at fourth singles.
Koprcina added a 6-1, 7-5 win over Steffensen at second singles before Princeton finished off a third-set tiebreak win at third singles for the final 5-2 margin.
Texas hits the road this weekend and opens conference play on Friday at Kansas.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
Overall, we're happy to have gotten the win. I think that we're still suffering from being a little bit of a depleted team, and the conditions today, being as warm as they were, definitely made things difficult. But I'm very, very proud of our ladies because even though they were a little banged up and depleted, they fought very hard and were able to get another win out of a Princeton team that's actually a very good team. It's good, and obviously the challenge to us is to get feeling better and healthy so that we can perform a little better going into the conference matches.
In all of the matches, overall, we did a good job of competing hard. [Katie] Poluta specifically, she was 4-1 down and was able to rally off ten or so games in a row, which was kind of remarkable.
