BYU's Kevin Nielsen also won two events on the first day of competition and sits in third with 3,932 points. Ingmar Vos, who is competing unattached, is in second place after day one, just 60 points off Williams' lead.
"Day one was a solid day for me except for the high jump," Williams said. "It was consistent all around. I'm looking forward to another day and getting some solid events and finishes up. I'm just starting out these meets trying to get a qualifier for NCAAs. That way I can just focus on individual events until NCAAs and then hopefully focus on just getting a big score. Hurdles and pole vault I'm solid in. 1500, I'm trying to run a good time. Day two is the better day of my events."
The decathlon, halfway complete after day one, has five events remaining which will take place on Thursday. The men will participate in the 110-meter hurdles, the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters to round out competition in the decathlon on Thursday.
Williams, a sophomore at Stanford, won both running events on Wednesday. Williams crossed the finish line in 10.72 in the 100-meter dash, while finishing with a winning time of 47.26 in the 400 meters. Nielsen, a sophomore at BYU, was victorious in both jumps. Nielsen won the long jump with a distance of 7.41m (24-3.75), while he tied for the victory in the high jump clearing 1.96m (6-5).
In the shot put, Olympian Trey Hardee was the winner with a throw of 14.98m (49-1.75). Hardee, who is a University of Texas alumnus, only competed in the shot put on Wednesday for Team Nike.
In the heptathlon, an event which has been dominated by Arkansas, the Razorbacks' Taliyah Brooks leads after the first day. She is joined by three of her teammates to round out the top four, while five Arkansas competitors sit inside the top seven after the first day.
"I think the day went pretty well," Arkansas sophomore Taliyah Brooks, who leads the women's heptathlon after day one, said. "We started off with a good hurdle and that energy transferred to high jump. Having my teammates and both of our coaches out here really pulls me through and gives me a lot of positive energy."
Brooks, who has 3,613 points after four events, leads her Arkansas teammate Alex Gochenour by just 30 points. Arkansas' Payton Stumbaugh sits just 44 points off the lead heading into the final three events – long jump, javelin, and 800 meters – on Thursday morning. .
The day began with wins in each of the first two events for Brooks, as she edged out Stumbaugh in the 100-meter hurdles with a winning time of 13.16. Arkansas runners took the top four spots in the first event of the 2016 Texas Relays. In the second event of the day – the high jump – Brooks again was victorious with a top mark of 1.78m (5-10). She edged out Texas Tech's Natalie Thompson, who cleared the bar at 1.72m (5-7.75) for a second-place finish.
It was time for a new champion as the field entered the shot put, and UTEP's Lucia Mokrasova took advantage with a winning throw of 13.07m (42-10.75). In the day's fourth and final event, Arkansas again took advantage of the sprint event to take the top four spots. This time it was Stumbaugh winning the 200-meter dash with a 23.76. Brooks finished third to end day one of competition in first place.
