AUSTIN, Texas—Day two of the 2016 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays was highlighted by strong performances on both the track and in the field, as several athletes hit USATF Olympic Trials qualifying marks. Two meet records also fell on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Meet records fell in both the Women's 3,000-Meter Steeplechase and the Girls 2,000-Meter Steeplechase. In the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase on the women's side, Rachel Johnson – running for Asics – set a new Texas Relays record with a time of 9:55.16. That time was nearly 10 seconds better than the record set by Mary Goldkamp last season.
Both the decathlon and heptathlon concluded on Thursday, after kicking off the Texas Relays on Wednesday. In the decathlon, it was Stanford's Harrison Williams who concluded a strong performance in the event by scoring 7,842 points to beat the rest of the field by nearly 400 points. In the heptathlon it was all Arkansas, as Razorback competitors took home the top three spots. Taliyah Brooks won the event with 5,991 points, eclipsing the 5,900-point mark for Olympic Trials. Brooks and her teammate, Payton Stumbaugh (5,985), both hit that mark. Last year's winner Alex Gochenour (Arkansas) finished third, while Texas' Ashtin Zamzow set a new UT school record with 5,829 points in the event to take fourth.
There were several other highlights during Thursday's events, including the Men's Hammer Throw, the Women's 800 Meters and the Men's 800 Meters. The 1,500 Meters and 5,000 Meters were also completed on Thursday night.
In the Men's Hammer Throw, Nike's AG Kruger won the event with a throw of 73.54m (241-03). His throw was the third-best all-time in the Texas Relays for a champion, and was good enough to qualify for USATF Olympic Trials. Purdue's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi had a top collegiate throw of 67.96m (222-11), the longest throw for a collegian at The Relays since UCLA's Alec Faldermeyer in 2013.
In the Women's 800 Meters, former Texas Longhorn Kendra Chambers won with a time of 2:04.53. Another former Longhorn, Olympic medalist Leo Manzano, competed in the Men's 800 Meters. Last season's champion is rehabbing from injury.
The 2016 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays will continue bright and early on Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Longhorn Network will have live coverage all day long, beginning with prelims at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m.
