03.08.2016 | Women's Golf
Sophomore Sophia Schubert and senior Natalie Karcher earned top-10 finishes to lead the Longhorns.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Texas Women's Golf posted its best finish of the season after its second-place showing at the UNF Collegiate on Tuesday.
Three golfers ended the tournament with season-best finishes, while all five finished in the top 30.
Sophia Schubert carded a 218 to tie for third, her best finish of the season. It marks the third time she has finished in the top 10 in her sophomore season and second time in the top four.
Senior Natalie Karcher also had a season-best finish with her tie for eighth place. She followed rounds of 73 and 76 with a third-round 72 to move up five spots and finish 5-over par. It marks her first top-10 finish this season.
Freshman Maddie Luitwieler tied for 21st, a career-best finish, after carding a 71, 75 and 81 to finish 11-over par.
Juniors Julia Beck and Haley Mills carded 75s on the third round, Beck tying for 26th and Mills tying for 30th.
Junior Anne Hakula moved up four spots with a final-round 76 to tie for 46th, competing as an individual for Texas.
The Longhorns will be back in action at the Texas-Hawaii Classic on Saturday, March 19 in Oahu, Hawaii.
Post-Tournament Comments
Head Coach Ryan Murphy
On the week: Overall it was an okay week for us. We just didn't have what we needed today. Houston played great, so hats off to them.
On Schubert: Individually, Sophia played really solid all week. She drove the ball really well and her iron play was solid. For her, it came down to the putter. She had her chances coming down the stretch, but just didn't get the putts to fall. It was just one of those days that every golfer has from time to time. I was very happy with her effort this week.
On Karcher: Natalie's 73 and 72 were very good rounds as well. Her play from start to finish was very consistent with just a couple hiccups in round two, otherwise she is in position to win. Natalie has been working diligently on her game and it's starting to come into form—it's nice to see her hard work pay off.
On Luitwieler: Maddie's finish was not what she wanted, but her 36-hole day (71-75) kept us in position to win, so I was very pleased with that.
