AUSTIN, Texas—The third day of the 2016 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays suffered through nearly three hours of weather delays early on Friday, but the weather couldn't slow down the competition inside of Mike A. Myers Stadium. Several strong performances highlighted the third day of the Texas Relays, which will conclude on Saturday.
After a delay which stretched slightly more than an hour to begin the day, track and field events began inside of Myers Stadium. High School and Collegiate preliminary races took place all morning, while the competition shifted to finals heats later in the day. After a little more than an hour into the competition on Friday, another weather delay struck The Relays and delayed the meet approximately 90 minutes. The competition did not end until after midnight local time on Saturday morning.
Several Texas Longhorns turned in strong performances to win events during the third day of the 89th Texas Relays, as freshman Asa Garcia (triple jump), Ariel Jones (400m hurdles) and Byron Robinson (400m hurdles) all picked up individual victories.
Garcia, who registered the top collegiate jump of the season to date, won the triple jump with a 13.29m (43-0.75). Jones was impressive in the 400m Hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 57.17 to take home the top spot. It marked the third time in the last four years that a Longhorn has won the event. In the Men's Invitational, Robinson was victorious with a mark of 50.48.
Texas A&M and Arkansas also had big days on Friday. A&M's Joannis Kyriazis won the Men's Javelin with a throw of 81.78m (268-07), the eighth-longest throw in collegiate history. The Aggies also picked up wins in the both the Men's Sprint Medley Relay (3:17.62) and Distance Medley Relay (9:51.79). It was the Aggies first victory in the SMR since 2011 and their fourth all-time. In the DMR, it was Texas A&M's second consecutive win.
The Razorbacks picked up victories in the Women's Sprint Medley Relay and the Men's 400 Meter Hurdles. Their SMR team won the event for a second consecutive season after setting a meet record in 2015. Larry Donald picked up a win for Arkansas in the 400m Hurdles, crossing the line with a time of 50.91 for the victory.
Others picking up victories in the collegiate and invitational side were Tec de Monterrey's Alberto Alvarez (Men's triple jump) and NIKE's Ashley Spencer (Women's 400m Hurdles). Alvarez won the triple jump with a distance of 16.86m (55-03.75), while Spencer dashed to a winning time of 56.80.
The final day of the 2016 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays will begin on Saturday at 8:15 am. If you're unable to make it to Mike A. Myers Stadium for the exciting final day of competition, Longhorn Network will have live action beginning at 1:30 pm.
