Longhorns drop league contest against Oklahoma before sweeping Prairie View A&M.
DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas – No. 17 Texas (17-8, 1-2 Big 12) split an afternoon doubleheader with No. 9 Oklahoma (12-8, 1-1 Big 12) and Prairie View A&M Sunday at Polo Tennis Club. UT fell to Oklahoma by a 4-0 count before shutting out Prairie View A&M in the day's second match, 7-0.
In the first contest, Oklahoma won doubles matches at the first and second doubles positions to claim the doubles point, though Texas counted a win from John Mee and Harrison Scott, who defeated Andre Biro and Maxime Mora by a 6-3 count at third doubles.
The Sooners pushed their lead to 3-0 behind straight-sets victories at the second and sixth positions. UT's Adrian Ortiz took the first set off of OU's Spencer Papa at third singles, but Papa rallied to win the following two sets to clinch the match for Oklahoma. The remaining matches were suspended.
Texas and Prairie View A&M began their match with the six singles contests given the threat of inclement weather. Texas won all 12 singles sets contested against Prairie View A&M and raced out to a 6-0 lead. Redshirt freshman Julian Zlobinsky effectively clinched the team win for Texas when he gave the Horns a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Anirudh Yadav at third singles.
The Longhorns made short work of the Panthers in doubles, where Texas won all three courts.
Texas contests its final home match of the season next Saturday when it hosts TCU at Polo Tennis Club. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Central. Michael Riechmann will be honored during Senior Day festivities prior to the match.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
On the Oklahoma match: You just have to give Oklahoma credit today. When we had opportunities for momentum, we didn't get it. On Friday night we took advantage of all of them and today, I felt like no matter whatever happened we couldn't quite get on top of them. They got on top of us today and they did a good job. With Andrew Harris in there playing well, that's a really good team. We just have to learn from it. We have some big matches coming up and we'll just keep pushing forward.
