Four golfers finished in the top-20 to lead the Longhorns to a second-place finish.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas Women's Golf earned runner-up honors at the Big 12 Championship after carding a third-round 288 at The Dominion Country Club on Sunday.
Four golfers finished in the top-20, with sophomore Sophia Schubert and junior Julia Beck finishing in the top five.
The last time two Longhorns finished in the top-five at the Big 12 Championship was in 2005, when Lisa Ferrero and Perry Swenson tied for second.
Schubert carded all three rounds at or under par, shooting 72-70-71 to tie for second. It marks her lowest finish of the season, her third top-10 finish in the last four tournaments and fifth overall this season.
She made even par through the front nine, making a bogey on hole three, but making a birdie on a par-5 on hole nine. On the back nine, she made a bogey on 13 to sit at 1-over, but followed with back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 and made even par for the remaining three holes.
Schubert has shot 16 of her 30 rounds at or under par this season, including five of the last six.
Beck posted the Longhorns' lowest score of the day with a 2-under par 70 for share of fifth place. She started strong, making three birdies on the front nine, including two of the first three holes. She made two bogeys on the back nine, but made a birdie on the par-5 18 to conclude the round.
Beck has finished in the top-10 three times this season.
Senior Natalie Karcher and junior Haley Mills rounded out the top-20 for Texas, Mills shooting a 73 and Karcher a 77 to tie for 19th.
Mills started the day with a birdie on the first hole. She made two bogeys on five and eight to conclude the front nine at 1-over par, but fired back with a birdie on 11 to return to even par. She finished the back nine even par to end the day with a 1-over par 73.
Senior Tezira Abe tied for 35th after making a birdie on a par-4 on hole six to finish the first nine holes 1-under par. She made three bogeys on the back nine to finish the third round with a 74.
Oklahoma State won the title after carding a third-round 282, while OSU's Kenzie Neisen earned medalist honors at 9-under par.
The Longhorns will learn their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, April 25 at 5 p.m. CT. The selection will be televised live on the Golf Channel.
Post-Tournament Comments
Head Coach Ryan Murphy
On the team's performance: I'm very proud of my team's effort today and the whole week, really. It was a tall task to keep pace with the Cowboys … it just seemed to be their week. But overall, I thought we did great and we certainly fought hard today!
On the effort this week: Individually, everyone contributed. That's very important for us. And Julia and Sophia's top-five finishes were just terrific in this field. We were close to putting it all together this week. We are gaining confidence and momentum. That's what you want this time of year.
Sophomore Sophia Schubert
On finishing second: It feels great. We have worked really hard to get to this point. I was in fourth yesterday, so coming into today, I really wanted to win, but Kenzie (Neisen) played really well today and was tough to beat, so I am happy with second.
On her mindset coming in: We have worked so hard, so I was confident in my play. I knew that as a team and individually, that we could win and had a good shot. I also knew that we were kind of the underdogs, so we were going to have to fight and that gave us motivation.
Junior Julia Beck
On her top-five finish: It feels nice going into regionals. I came in very focused, but relaxed this weekend. I really just tried to have no expectations and play my game. I feel like I know my game really well, so I just wanted to stick to the game plan and play with confidence.
