PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Marcus Johnson has inked a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, the team announced on Friday (May 6). Johnson, a four-year wide receiver from League City, Texas, played in 42 games for Texas during his career. He made 18 career starts – seven each in 2014 and 2015.
"When you think about Marcus, you think about speed," Charlie Strong stated about Johnson. "He's a really fast guy, but he's someone who can get the ball on the perimeter and be very effective because he has enough speed to run away from people."
As a senior during the 2015 season, Johnson played in 10 games and made seven starts at wideout. He also appeared on special teams for the Longhorns. After playing in the season opener against Notre Dame, Johnson missed the Rice and Cal games the following two weeks due to injury. He finished the season with 12 receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown. Against Oklahoma, Johnson set a season-high with four catches for 35 yards, including a 24-yard TD reception in the victory.
During his junior season, Johnson played in all 13 games with seven starts. He finished the 2014 season third on the roster with 27 receptions and 313 yards. He also returned kicks for UT. Johnson shined brightest in the Red River Showdown against Oklahoma, registering a season-best 93 yards on a career-high seven receptions against OU. As a sophomore, he played in 11 games with four starts, averaging a team-high 15.9 yards per reception. He finished fifth on the team with 22 receptions and fourth with 350 receiving yards.
Johnson, a physical culture and sports major, was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in spring 2014.
