Rodrigo Banzer helps Bolivia out of Americas Group III; incoming freshman Christian Sigsgaard on Denmark roster; former Longhorn Miguel Reyes Varela wins doubles match for Mexico.
Current, former and future Longhorns are spread across the globe this weekend as members of Davis Cup teams for their respective nations.
UT rising sophomore Rodrigo Banzer enjoyed a productive week for his native Bolivia and helped his home nation to a promotion into Americas Group II.
Bolivia went undefeated in Davis Cup America Group III ties this week against Jamaica, Cuba and Panama before taking on Costa Rica on Saturday. Banzer was scheduled to play a doubles rubber for Bolivia in the tie against Costa Rica, but his services were not needed, as Bolivia won both its singles matches to clinch the win over Costa Rica. The doubles rubber was called off given that Bolivia had clinched the overall result.
Bolivia breezed through its Pool "A" ties earlier in the week to earn its spot in the promotional playoff against Costa Rica. Banzer partnered with Alejandro Mendoza in doubles and defeated Jamaica, Cuba and Panama to help Bolivia win all three ties and advance to the playoff, where it has since ascended to America Group II for 2017.
Future Longhorn Christian Sigsgaard is on Denmark's roster for its ongoing Davis Cup tie against Finlnd in Europe/Africa Group II but is not scheduled to compete this weekend. Sigsgaard helped the Danes to a Davis Cup victory over the republic of Georgia last March.
Former Longhorn Miguel Reyes Varela (2006-09) of Mexico teamed with Santiago Gonzalez to post a 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 win over Peru's Jorge Panta and Juan Varillas Patino-Samudio to trim Peru's lead over Mexico to 2-1 in the second round of Group II Americas action.
