Softball’s Gortarez helps USA Women’s Baseball to an 11-10 exhibition win

Longhorns freshman went 1-for-5 with a RBI while tossing two perfect innings from the mound
AUSTIN, Texas – In their first exhibition game before eventually heading out to the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women's Baseball World Cup in September, Texas softball freshman infielder Jade Gortarez and the USA Baseball Women's National Team rallied past the So Cal Birds 16U men's baseball team, 11-10, late Saturday night in Villa Park, Calif.
Gortarez started the contest at shortstop and batted second in the Red, White & Blue's line-up against the So Cal Birds, going 1-for-5 at the plate with a RBI. She also tossed two innings of perfect relief from the mound, striking out two while facing the minimum six batters.
Team USA jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and led 5-4 after the opening three innings of play. The U.S. Women quickly extended their advantage to 9-4 during the bottom of the fifth, putting up four runs on three hits, including Gortarez' RBI single. The So Cal Birds answered back with a five-run sixth and even took a 10-9 lead in the seventh before the Red, White & Blue rallied for two tallies in the bottom of the seventh on the way to a one-run victory.
The USA Baseball Women's National Team will again face the So Cal Birds 16U on Sun., Aug. 28, at 5:30 p.m. CT at the Major League Baseball (MLB) Urban Youth Academy in Compton, Calif. You can follow the Women's National Team on Twitter (@USABaseballWNT) for scores, updates and photos.
The No. 2-ranked USA Baseball Women's National Team will face No. 9 Hong Kong in the Opening Round of the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup on Sept. 3.
