Freshman QB wins weekly award for the second straight week
IRVING, Texas – For the second straight week to begin the 2016 season, Texas quarterback Shane Buechele has been named the Big 12 Conference's Newcomer of the Week.
Buechele became the first-ever true freshman quarterback at Texas to start the first two games of his Longhorns career. He had been just the second (Bobby Layne, 1944) true freshman QB to ever start the season opener at UT.
A native of Arlington, Texas, Buechele completed 22-of-27 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-7 win over UTEP on Saturday night. He did not throw an interception and finished the game with an efficiency rating of 206.28. His 81.5-completion percentage tied the single-game record by a true freshman QB at Texas (James Brown, 1994).
Buechele also rushed for 34 yards in the game, totaling 278 yards of offense in the victory. His four touchdown passes are tied for the third-most in a game by a UT freshman and his six touchdown passes have already tied the school record for TD passes by a Longhorns' true freshman QB.
The Longhorns travel to California for a matchup with the California Golden Bears on Saturday night in Berkeley.
