LAWRENCE, Kan. – Junior Brooke McCarty registered a team-high 15 points as No. 15/17 Texas Women's Basketball (9-4, 3-0 Big 12 Conference) defeated Kansas (6-8, 0-3 Big 12 Conference) inside Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening, 66-54.
With the win, Texas is off to its second straight 3-0 Big 12 start and fourth of program history.
Texas leads the all-times series over Kansas, 23-10, and has captured the last nine meetings.
"We did what we had to do to win," said Texas head coach Karen Aston. "We'll get home tomorrow, and we'll regroup and be ready for TCU on Saturday."
McCarty also added six rebounds and a team-high three assists on the night. Freshman Joyner Holmes posted 13 points and a team-high nine boards and three blocks while junior Ariel Atkins notched 12 points and five rebounds in the contest.
As a team, Texas shot 39.1 percent (25-64) from the field while holding Kansas to a 26.4 shooting percentage (19-72). The Longhorns outrebounded the Jayhawks, 61-35, marking the seventh most rebounds recorded in a single game in program history.
Kansas was led by redshirt junior Jessica Washington's double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Four straight layups from the Longhorns gave them the early 8-0 edge headed into the first timeout, but a 7-1 run from the Jayhawks tightened things to 10-7 Texas at the 2:09 mark. Junior Tasia Foman knocked down the only three of the opening quarter as the Horns closed on a 7-2 spread to lead at the end of the first, 17-9.
The Jayhawks outscored the Longhorns 21-18 in the second quarter, but Texas paced itself behind two three-pointers from McCarty to hold onto the lead. After two straight triples from Kansas, freshman Jada Underwood notched her first bucket of the night to close the half, 35-30 Texas.
The Longhorn offense took over in the third stanza, outscoring the Jayhawks 19-8. A Holmes layup put Texas up by double-digits (47-36) at the 2:35 mark, and four from Atkins closed out the quarter, 54-38 Horns.
Texas took its largest lead of the night (66-46) after a layup from sophomore Jordan Hosey with 4:11 remaining in the game. From there, both teams were scoreless from the field with Kansas bagging the last six points of the match from the charity stripe, but the Longhorns came away with the 66-54 win.
Coming up, Texas will return home as it hosts TCU on Saturday, Jan. 7. Tip-off inside the Erwin Center is set for 6 p.m. CT as Aston goes for her 200th career win. The game will be televised on Longhorn Network.
