Junior Leonardo Telles knocks off Baylor’s Johannes Schretter in straight sets, heads to Indian Wells next week.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas junior Leonardo Telles completed an impressive run through the singles draw and won the singles title Monday at the ITA Texas Regional Championships.
The 86th-ranked Brazilian defeated yet another ranked opponent and overpowered Baylor's 40th-ranked Johannes Schretter in the final, 6-4, 6-3. The last three of Telles' six regional wins came against ITA top-70 opponents.
"Obviously I'm very happy, and this was a great week," Telles said. "I was able to stay consistent throughout the tournament, and I played well in key points. This tournament was a great opportunity to put together some big wins. I'm excited about what's next."
UT's first ITA Texas Regional singles champion since Daniel Whitehead in 2012, Telles advances to college tennis' second major of the year, the ITA National Fall Championships at Indian Wells (Nov. 1-5).
"Leonardo played a really outstanding tournament," said UT head coach Michael Center. "Mentally and physically, he was solid from start to finish. Leo was relentless with his level of play, and he got stronger as the event went on. Leo never flinched. To win points against him regardless of the score, was very difficult. He gets to go play at Indian Wells, and that's a really nice honor."
