AUSTIN, Texas – Inclement weather forced the relocation of No. 8 Texas' season-opening doubleheader, but the Longhorns managed a sweep of UTSA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi indoors Friday afternoon at Weller Tennis Center.
Friday's match against UTSA began at the new Texas Tennis Center. The two teams played 10 minutes of the opening doubles session before light rain forced the players off the court. Shortly thereafter, both the UTSA match and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi match to follow were moved indoors and off-campus to Weller Indoor.
Upon relocation, Texas claimed the doubles point over UTSA. UT's 23rd-ranked tandem of sophomore Yuya Ito and junior Harrison Scott knocked off UTSA's Kai Breitbach and Christian Carrillo by a 6-2 count at second doubles. Texas closed out the double point with a victory at first doubles.
Junior Rodrigo Banzer and sophomore Christian Sigsgaard, who won the first point ever played at Texas Tennis Center in their match at first doubles, held off UTSA's Gabriel Bugiga and Juri Reckow 6-3 to close out the doubles point. The remaining match was suspended.
The 27th-ranked Scott finished off UTSA's Bugiga 6-2, 6-2 at first singles to give the Horns a 2-0 leads. Banzer and Ito finished off identical 6-2, 6-1 wins at the fourth and third positions to lock up the team win for Texas.
Senior John Mee, ranked No. 52 in the latest singles rankings, notched a 6-1, 6-3 win over UTSA's Joao Ceolin at fifth singles for a 5-0 Texas lead. Sigsgaard added a 6-1, 6-4 win over Reckow at second singles, and redshirt sophomore Johnny Goodwin finished off the 7-0 Texas win with his three-set victory over Carrillo at sixth singles.
In the nightcap, Texas needed less than 30 minutes to finish off the doubles point. Banzer and Mee teamed to shut out the Islanders' Carlos Pedros Cuevas and Lars Bijsterbosch at third doubles, 6-0. UT finished off the doubles point by way of a 6-2 win from Markes and Ito over Okkie Kellerman and Francois Kellerman.
Sigsgaard staked Texas to a 2-0 lead with his 6-1, 6-0 win over William Mottet at first singles. Ito knocked off Francois Kellerman 6-2, 6-0 at second singles, and Markes finished off the Longhorns' 4-0 win with his 6-2, 6-1 victory over Biyk Akinshemoyin at fifth singles. The remaining matches were suspended.
Texas hosts SMU on Sunday (Jan. 21) at 2:30 p.m. at Texas Tennis Center. The facility's grand opening ceremony is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
