Harrison Scott advances to the second round of singles, and Texas sends two doubles pairs to the round of 16.
TULSA, Okla. – Texas junior Harrison Scott advanced to the second round of singles, and UT sent two doubles pairs to the second round of the main draw Thursday at the ITA All-American Championships. The event is the first of three major championships on the college tennis calendar.
The 22nd-ranked Scott met Florida State's 47th-ranked Guy Iradukunda in round one of the main singles draw and emerged with a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3 victory. The Canadian will meet Texas A&M's Jordi Arconada in the second round on Friday (start time TBD).
"That guy (FSU's Iradukunda) is a heck of a player, but Harrison settled down and played a great third set," said UT head coach Michael Center. "Harrison cut out some of the errors from the second set, and I know he was pleased with the result. When Harrison gets out there for a match, he has a chance against anyone."
Scott joined All-America sophomore Yuya Ito to deliver the first of two Texas doubles wins on the day. The tandem held off Mississippi's Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton, 6-4, 6-4. Juniors Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles followed up with a tight 7-6, 6-7 (1), 1-0 (10-8) win over Columbia's Victor Pham and Jackie Tang (second-round opponents TBD).
"It's not easy to win doubles matches here," Center said. "Our guys competed well, and that's what I'm looking for. As long as we compete and communicate out there, our doubles will continue to improve. We want to see how much better we can be in doubles."
Ito joined Scott in the main singles draw but was eliminated by Oregon's 19th-ranked Thomas Laurent, 6-4, 6-4.
"Yuya was a little disappointed, and he had not played in a while," Center added. "He is excited to get back out there tomorrow in the consolation bracket."
