Harrison Scott advances to third round of singles, and Texas sends two doubles pairs to the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships.
TULSA, Okla. – Texas junior Harrison Scott reached the third round of the main singles draw, and UT advanced two doubles pairs to the quarterfinals Friday at the ITA All-American Championships.
The 22nd-ranked Scott won his second three-set match in as many days and held off Texas A&M's Jordi Arconada, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
"Harrison's level of play improved in the third set, and he outplayed his opponent at the end," said UT head coach Michael Center. "Arconada is a great player and a very good athlete. He won a ton of matches for Texas A&M last year, and he's hard to beat."
Scott's win sets up a third-round showdown against top-seeded Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State.
"Torpegaard is an outstanding player, and we've played against him often," Center said. "He's the top-seeded player in the tournament, and this is a great opportunity for Harrison to play one of the best."
Scott teamed up with Texas sophomore Yuya Ito to reach the doubles quarterfinals, and the Longhorns tandem of juniors Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles will join them in the quarters. Ito and Scott knocked off Tulane's Luis Erlenbusch and Tyler Schick, 6-3, 6-3, while Banzer and Telles outlasted Georgia's Nathan Ponwith and Emil Reinberg, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-0).
