Texas’ run through the singles and doubles draws ends at the hands of three top-five opponents.
TULSA, Okla. – Texas posed formidable challenges in the third rounds of the singles and doubles draws, but all three Longhorns entries were eliminated Saturday at the ITA All-American Championships.
Texas junior Harrison Scott started off his day in the third round (round of 16) of the main singles draw against Ohio State's top-ranked and top-seeded Mikael Torpegaard. UT's 22nd-ranked Canadian took a 5-3 first-set lead, but Torpegaard claimed the ensuing four games to close out a 7-5 first-set win. Torpegaard finished off the second set, 6-3 to close out the win and advance to the singles quarterfinals.
Scott joined UT sophomore Yuya Ito in the doubles quarterfinals against North Carolina's third-ranked tandem of William Blumberg and Robert Kelly. Scott and Ito captured the first set, 7-5, but UNC claimed the second set 6-4 to force a third-set match tiebreak, where the Tar Heels prevailed 10-4 and eliminated the Texas tandem.
Texas juniors Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles met Florida's fifth-ranked pair of Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez and suffered a 7-6, 6-4 defeat.
"We went 0-3 today, but the guys really played well and I'm proud of their effort," said UT head coach Michael Center. "Harrison played the No. 1 player and was right there. He had some set points in the first set but came short. We played two of the top doubles teams in the country, and we were right there in both of those matches. We have to work on some things, but the attitude, effort and level of play were outstanding. All of these guys had a very good tournament."
Texas resumes fall tournament play on Oct. 13 at the UTSA Cup in San Antonio.
