Turati advances to second round at Indian Wells

UT sophomore Bianca Turati wins in straight sets, moves on to round of 32 at the season’s second major.
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Texas sophomore Bianca Turati posted a straight-sets singles win and advanced to the round of 32 (second round) Wednesday at the inaugural ITA National Fall Championships.
The 24th-ranked Turati took on Auburn's 60th-ranked Taylor Russo and notched a 6-4, 6-1 win. Turati meets fourth-seeded Ena Shibahara of UCLA in the second round on Thursday.
UT's 39th-ranked sophomore Petra Granic met Alle Sanford of North Carolina in the first round of the singles draw. Granic dropped the first set but claimed the second set, 6-4 to prolong the match. Sanford, however, finished off a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win to send Granic to the consolation singles draw.
In doubles, senior Dani Wagland and freshman Marta Perez-Mur suffered a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to California's 11th-ranked tandem of Karla Popovic and Olivia Hauger. Wagland and Perez-Mur will move on to the consolation draw.

It was a long physical day at the office today for the Longhorns. Petra Granic started us off going toe-to-toe with one of the better players in the country, (ITA Oracle Masters Champion) Alle Sanford, and came up short by the slimmest of margins. Bianca Turati came through with a very solid victory against a tremendous competitor and player from Auburn. Marta and Dani came up a little short against a very experienced team from Cal but fought like champions. All four Longhorns are really excited at the opportunities that present themselves tomorrow. It should be another great day of tennis!
