AUSTIN, Texas – A brace (two goals) from sophomore forward Cyera Hintzen and a goal by freshman midfielder Haley Berg helped power No. 18 Texas soccer (14-3-2) to a commanding 3-0 victory over North Texas (14-4-4) on Friday night in NCAA First Round action in front of 1,276 fans at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
With the win, the Longhorns now advance on to next weekend's NCAA Second Round to face Clemson on Fri., Nov. 17, at a time and location still to be determined.
For Hintzen, her two tallies improved her team-leading scoring total to nine goals on the season, while Berg registered her sixth score and also dished her fourth assist of the campaign. Sophomore net minder Nicole Curry extended her single-season record and the program tied the single-season record for shutouts (originally set back in 2008) with the 11th blanking of 2017. Freshman midfielder Emily Strouphauer and sophomore defender Atu Mshana were also credited with their third and first assists of the season in the victory, respectively.
The Burnt Orange & White out-shot the Mean Green by a total of 15-8 and 6-3 in shots on goal, while managing a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks.
The two teams spent the first few minutes of the contest feeling each other out as junior midfielder Katie Glenn had a shot blocked from distance at 1:16, and UNT forward Aaliyah Glenn fired wide left from 16 yards out at 6:34.
Texas soon began to exert more control over the match as Hintzen made her first contribution on the stat sheet at 8:26 by launching a 25-yard blast just over the cross bar.
North Texas earned the match's first corner at the 9:46 mark but the eventual feed into the six-yard box was caught in a crowd by UT's Curry.
During the 19th minute, the Mean Green had a solid chance go awry as tightly-marked midfielder Natalie McDonough managed to get off a shot from just outside the top of the box, but her effort drifted just over the top.
It was Berg who made the decisive move to start Texas' opening score by splitting a pair of defenders out on the right wing during the 20th minute. After moving to her left towards the 18, the Celina, Texas, native fed a ball into the middle. Hintzen settled the ball, pivoted and finished just inside the right post from 14 yards out for a 1-0 lead.
Just 1:03 later, it was North Texas nearly locating the equalizer as McDonough launched another drive from 20 yards out just a couple of feet over the cross bar.
Following another Hintzen close call on a lengthy try at 23:27, the Longhorns doubled their advantage at 28:19. Strouphauer managed to beat a UNT defender about 40 yards out and dribbled upfield. The Round Rock, Texas, product delivered a perfect through ball up the middle to Berg who managed to move in 1-v-1 on Mean Green keeper Brooke Bradley before scoring from 12 yards out to make it 2-0.
Out of the locker room, the Longhorns continued to threaten with consecutive corners. Off the first at 50:50, Strouphauer had a 16-yard effort blocked just inside the six. Off a subsequent corner, junior midfielder Kayra Dollas got off a header from nine yards out that was saved out of the goal mouth by the right hand of diving UNT keeper Bradley.
Strouphauer was at it again during the 65th minute as her blast from 19 yards out was deflected wide of the left post and out of play by Bradley.
Finally in the 69th minute, Texas found more pay dirt as Mshana launched a long free kick from UT's side of midfield. Her delivery bounced once inside the 18, eluding the crowd out front before dropping past a pair of UNT defenders. Hintzen somehow managed to get her right foot under both markers and tapped her ninth goal of the season home from seven yards to finalize the Longhorns output at three goals.
Down the stretch, the Mean Green forced routine Curry saves on lengthy shots by McDonough (68:16) and midfielder Elle Marie Defrain (76:54), but couldn't seriously threaten to get on the board as the Longhorns worked to run out the remainder of the clock.
