11.17.2017 | Women's Golf
Sophia Schubert was the 2017 U.S. Amateur Champion.
Senior Texas golfer Sophia Schubert is one of 12 amateur golfers nationally who has been selected to participate in a practice session in advance of the 2018 Curtis Cup Match. The two-day session for prospective players will take place Dec. 17-18 at Shoal Creek, outside of Birmingham, Ala., and host site of the 2018 U.S. Women's Open Championship.
A biennial competition, the 40th Curtis Cup Match will be contested June 8-10, 2018, at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y. The Great Britain & Ireland Team defeated the USA Team, 11.5-8.5, in the 2016 Match at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Enniskerry, Ireland.
Invitation to the Curtis Cup practice session does not guarantee selection to the USA Team that will compete in June. Players not invited will also be considered for inclusion on the team.
The Curtis Cup Match is contested by two teams of eight female amateur players, one from the United States of America and one from Great Britain and Ireland, which is comprised of England, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The USGA's International Team Selection Committee selects the USA Team, while The R&A selects the GB&I Team.
Schubert, who won the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championship over the summer, leads her team with a 70.22 stroke average this season. She has finished among the top-10 individuals in each of the three tournaments in which she has competed this season, including winning individual medalist honors at the 2017 Betsy Rawls Invitational. She is 210-9-2 against collegiate individuals this season.
Schubert is ranked No. 5 in the Golfweek women's collegiate individual rankings and is No. 21 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. She was named the Big 12 Conference October Golfer of the Month.
Schubert has helped her team to a top-five finish in each of the three tournaments in which she has competed, including a 15-stroke team victory at the Betsy Rawls Invitational. As a team, the Longhorns are currently No. 8 in the Golfweek women's team collegiate rankings.
Schubert's 72.35 stroke average for her Texas career is the best in program history, and 46 of her 84 career rounds have been at par or better.
