Evans rewrites own school record at Texas Invitational

Texas junior Joanna Evans lowers her school mark in the 500-yard freestyle.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas junior Joanna Evans toppled her own school record in the 500-yard freestyle and highlighted day two for the Longhorns Thursday night at the Texas Invitational.
Evans, who represented The Bahamas at the 2016 Olympic Games, won the 500-yard freestyle championship final with plenty of room to spare in 4 minutes, 35.05 seconds. The swim fell well under her school mark of 4:36.97 set last season at the Big 12 Championships. The Texas junior notched the second-fastest time in the nation this season, only behind Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky of Stanford.
Texas opened the night with a convincing win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as senior Rebecca Millard, sophomore Claire Adams and juniors Brooke Hansen and Remedy Rule were victorious in 1 minute, 28.81 seconds, just shy of the NCAA automatic-qualifying standard of 1:28.71. Millard led off in 22.51 before Adams split 21.96 seconds on the second leg. Hansen picked up the third leg in 22.10 and Rule anchored in 22.24.
Former Longhorn Madisyn Cox was victorious in her signature event, the 200 IM. Cox, a bronze medalist in the event for Team USA at the 2017 FINA World Championships, took the win at 1:54.39. Texas freshman Evie Pfeifer placed sixth at 1:56.82.
Millard added a second-place showing in the 50 freestyle "A" final at 22.28, and Adams took third at 22.34. Rule tied for sixth at 22.68.
Texas wrapped the evening with a second-place finish from Adams, junior Olivia Anderson, Rule and Millard in the 400 medley relay at 3:32.59.
Day three of the Texas Invitational begins Friday with the preliminary round at 10 a.m. CT. Finals are set for 6 p.m.
