Texas juniors Leonardo Telles and Rodrigo Banzer fall to Wake Forest in Sunday’s doubles final.
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Texas juniors Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles fell in straight sets to Wake Forest's Petros Chrysochos and Skander Mansouri in the doubles final Sunday at the inaugural ITA National Fall Championships. The event is the second of three major championships on the college tennis calendar, joining the ITA All-American Championships and the NCAA Championships.
The eighth-seeded Texas tandem held serve in the match's first game, but Chrysochos and Mansouri took the next five games for a 5-1 first-set lead. UT held for 5-2, but Wake held serve to close out set one, 6-2.
The second set progressed in similar fashion. UT held serve for 1-0, but once again, the Demon Deacons held serve and registered a pair of service breaks for a 5-1 lead. Texas held for 5-2, but Wake Forest held serve in the next game to close out the set and the match, 6-2.
Banzer and Telles were bidding for Texas' first doubles title at one of college tennis' three majors since 2015, when Søren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool won the doubles draw at the NCAA Championships. The Texas duo won three matches at Indian Wells and toppled the top seed in the draw, Florida's Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez.
