Texas improves to 7-0 and gives the Lady Bulldogs their first loss of the season
ATHENS, Ga. - The Texas Women's basketball team earned its seventh win of the season, handing the previously undefeated Georgia Lady Bulldogs their first loss of the 2017-18 season, 81-53, on Sunday in Stegeman Coliseum.
The Longhorns shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) for the game with 46 points in the first half and 35 in the second. 21 points came from the bench alone. Texas led for 39:35 and outmatched Georgia's defense by winning the points off the turnover battle 12-6.
Senior Ariel Atkins led the way for the Longhorns, scoring 17 points overall with 14 in the first half alone. The guard was 3-for-3 in three-pointers and tallied nine defensive rebounds, both season highs.
Additional top performers for Texas were junior Jatarie White who had 13 points, six rebounds, and a steal, and junior Lashann Higgs with 12 points, five assists and four rebounds. Senior Brooke McCarty also joined in the double-digits for points with 12.
Atkins opened the game with a jumper, before Georgia's Robinson answered with a layup. Atkins returned down to the arc to grab a three. After a layup from Lashann Higgs, Texas went on a 12-0 run to separate the score 19-4 before closing out the quarter 22-9.
Georgia redshirt sophomore Taja Cole scored the first four points of the second quarter before McCarty stepped in with a layup for the burnt orange. Higgs made it to the line after a foul from UGA's Robinson and sunk both free throws to bring the score to 26-13. Texas scored a game-high 24 points and connected 62.5 percent of their field goals in the second quarter.
After the break, Texas ran with their lead, scoring 21 more points and energizing their play with 14 rebounds in the third quarter. The team tallied six assists alone in this segment, accounting for nearly half of the game total.
The Texas defense held firm in the last period, as Georgia experienced a 6:35 scoring drought. The largest margin of the game (31 points) came after a jumper from junior Olamide Aborowa at 3:51. In the final 30 seconds, the last Texas points of the game came from a top of the arc three-pointer from freshman forward Rellah Boothe, the first of her career.
Next, the team will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee for their game against the No. 12/13 Lady Volunteers on Sunday, December 10 at 2 p.m. CT. The matchup will be televised on ESPN2 and aired on 105.3 FM in Austin and online at texassports.com.
