AUSTIN, Texas- Four Longhorns scored in the double-figures as No. 6/10 Texas Women's Basketball (21-7, 14-3 Big 12 Conference) dropped its final regular season home game to Iowa State (17-11, 8-9 Big 12 Conference) inside the Erwin Center on Friday evening, 70-66.
Iowa State leads the all-times series over Texas, 18-14.
"You are always disappointed when it's senior night and you do not take care of your business," said Texas head coach Karen Aston. "Credit to Iowa State. They have been playing very good basketball."
Junior Brooke McCarty led the way for Texas with 12 points and tied her season-high with six rebounds. Senior Brianna Taylor followed suit with 11 points and five rebounds.
Freshmen Joyner Holmes and Alecia Sutton rounded out the Horns in double-digits with 10 points apiece.
As a team, Texas shot 40.0 percent from the field (28-70) while Iowa State shot at a 46.4 percentage (26-56). The Longhorns outrebounded the Cyclones, 45-30.
Iowa State was led by senior Seanna Johnson with 22 points.
The Horns jumped out on an 8-2 spread in the opening minutes, but three-straight buckets for the Cyclones allowed them to take the 15-14 lead with 2:13 remaining in the first quarter. After evening the score twice more, Iowa State fired off a triple to end the stanza, 22-19.
Iowa State never relinquished control in the second quarter, padding its lead to as many as seven after a layup at the 4:46 mark. Four consecutive points from Taylor and a Lang layup got the Horns back within one (32-31 ISU), but the Cyclones held the 37-33 edge headed into the half.
ISU took its largest advantage of the night, an 8-point difference, with 4:55 remaining in the third. Five late points off the hands of McCarty and junior Ariel Atkins cut the margin to one with 45 seconds remaining in the quarter, but another Cyclones triple beat the shot clock to make their lead 58-54.
A 6-0 push gave Texas its first advantage of the game since the opening minutes, 60-58, with 7:16 remaining in regulation, but Iowa State responded with nine points to lead 67-60. The Longhorns continued to battle back, and a Sutton layup off an Atkins steal made it a two-point game with 44 seconds remaining, 68-66 ISU. The Horns were unable to convert their last possession and two from the line handed the game to Iowa State, 70-66.
