AUSTIN – Day two of the 2017 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays saw three meet records broken, including one collegiate record, as the action heated up in Austin.
Texas A&M's Lindon Victor scored 8,472 points in the men's decathlon to set a new collegiate record, breaking Texas Ex Trey Hardee's previous record of 8,465 points set at the 2006 Texas Relays. Victor had the record in his sights after eight events, but struggled in the pole vault and fatigued in the 1500-meter run quickly. However, he was able to power through, crossing the finish line with just over a second to spare in order to set the record.
In the women's heptathlon, Erica Bougard of Chula Vista Elite (graduate of Mississippi State) was victorious with 6,246 points. Her score was a new Texas Relays record.
Two meet records fell in the Invitational 800 meters. On the men's side, UTEP's Michael Saruni won with a time of 1:45.82. It was not only a meet record, but a Mike A. Myers Stadium record. He bested Leo Manzano's previous meet record of 1:46.63. On the women's side, Nike's Crishauna Williams set a new Texas Relays record with a time of 2:02.25 to edge out defending back-to-back champion Kendra Chambers (2:02.43).
Impressive marks were not only set on the track Thursday, but also in the field events. Northern Arizona junior Brooke Anderson was victorious in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 220-10 (67.32m). Her throw was the longest winning throw at the Texas Relays since 2013 (Amanda Bingson, Nike/NYAC) and was the longest throw for a collegiate winner in Relays history.
