Sunday’s 3 p.m. match against Rice will move indoors to Weller Tennis Center.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Wake Forest (10-1) won the doubles point and three singles contests in a 4-0 victory over host No. 8 Texas (12-3) Saturday afternoon at UT's Edgar O. and Melanie A. Weller Tennis Center on the grounds of UT Golf Club.
Wake Forest opened the match by winning the doubles point. The Demon Deacons' top-ranked duo of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim knocked off UT senior George Goldhoff and sophomore Leonardo Telles by a 6-3 count at first doubles.
At second doubles, UT sophomores Harrison Scott and Julian Zlobinsky held a 5-4 lead over Wake's Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev, but the Demon Deacons held serve, registered a service break and held serve once more to close out a 7-5 win. The remaining match at third doubles was suspended.
Gojo stretched Wake Forest's lead to 2-0 behind his 6-0, 7-5 win at second singles over UT's 48th-ranked Scott, who had not lost a match since last October. Wake's 34th-ranked Seraphim knocked off UT's 86th-ranked Telles by a 6-4, 6-2 count at fourth singles, and the Demon Deacons' second-ranked Chrysochos finished off win with his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Texas' 11th-ranked Sigsgaard at first singles.
Texas was poised to challenge for wins at the second, fifth and sixth positions, but the matches were suspended given Wake Forest had clinched the team victory.
Texas closes out its home stand on Sunday when it meets Rice at Weller Tennis Center (3 p.m. CT). The match was relocated from its original site, Westwood Country Club, due to the threat of inclement weather.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
I think Wake Forest just played better than us today. We had good intensity. Wake Forest has a heck of a team. They were getting more free points against us than we were getting against them. Wake Forest out-served us, and on the big points I thought they were more aggressive than we were today. We didn't capitalize on our opportunities. I give them credit. They were better than us today.
