Longhorns split weekend home stand in advance of this week’s west coast road trip.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 8 Texas (13-3) won the doubles point and claimed five singles matches in a 6-1 victory over No. 34 Rice (11-5) Sunday afternoon at UT's Edgar O. and Melanie A. Weller Tennis Center on the grounds of UT Golf Club.
Texas opened the match by winning a pair of doubles matches to secure the doubles point. At second doubles, UT's Harrison Scott and Julian Zlobinsky broke Rice's Oscar Janglin and Emanuel Llamas for a 4-2 lead and held serve the rest of the way to put away a 6-3 win.
At third doubles, UT's Christian Sigsgaard and Colin Markes broke Rice's Eric Rutledge and Jake Hansen in the first service game and held serve throughout the match to finish off a 6-4 win. The remaining doubles court was suspended.
Sophomore Rodrigo Banzer gave Texas a 2-0 lead with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Rutledge at fifth singles. Sigsgaard stretched the Longhorns' lead to 3-0 by way of his 6-3, 6-3 win over Jamie Malik at first singles.
Rice answered with a win at third singles, but UT's Zlobinsky clinched the team win for Texas with his 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Janglin at sixth singles.
Texas sophomore Leonardo Telles and senior George Goldhoff each closed out three-set victories via super-tiebreakers to finish off the 6-1 team win in favor of the Longhorns.
Texas takes to the road this week to meet Stanford (March 10) and No. 7 California (March 11).
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
On bouncing back from Saturday's match
I don't think much changed. We were a little more aggressive today. In the doubles, we got our hands on balls around the net more than we did yesterday. We had a really good attitude. We were really aggressive to start the match, and I was really happy to see that.
