Allen earns recognition on pair of Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball award teams

Freshman forward named to All-Big 12 Third Team and one of six players chosen to Big 12 All-Newcomer Team.
IRVING, Texas — University of Texas freshman forward Jarrett Allen earned a spot on a pair of 2016-17 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men's Basketball Award teams, the league office announced Sunday. Allen was selected to both the six-person All-Big 12 Third Team and the six-person Big 12 All-Newcomer Team.
Allen leads the team and ranks third in the league in rebounding (8.5 rpg) and also leads the squad and ranks fourth in the conference in blocked shots (48). He ranks second on the team in scoring (13.6 ppg), leads the team in minutes played (31.8 mpg) and has converted 58.2% (173-297) from the field. Allen has reached double figures in scoring 24 times and double figures in rebounds 13 times through the first 31 contests.
He has recorded 12 double-doubles this season (tied for third-highest total by a UT freshman in school history), including eight in Big 12 Conference play. In Big 12 play, Allen has averaged a team-best 16.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game while converting 59.9% (118-197) from the field. He reached double figures in scoring in 17 of the 18 league games.
The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches. The coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Texas (10-21, 4-14 Big 12) opens play in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship against No. 7 seed Texas Tech (18-13, 6-12 Big 12) on Wednesday, March 8 in Kansas City. Tip is set for approximately 8:30 p.m. Central at Sprint Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
