Longhorns welcome Texas Tech for Senior Day on Saturday.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 8 Texas (18-6, 1-2 Big 12) picked up a straight-sets singles win from senior George Goldhoff, but it wasn't enough as No. 4 Baylor knocked off the Longhorns by a 4-1 count Wednesday evening at Caswell Tennis Center.
Baylor posted doubles wins at the first and second positions to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 match lead. Baylor's Max Tchoutakian staked the Bears to a 2-0 lead behind his 6-3, 6-1 win over UT freshman Christian Sigsgaard at second singles. Goldhoff put the Horns on the board with his victory over Will Little at fourth singles.
Goldhoff broke Little for a 2-0 first-set lead and cruised to a 6-1 win. The Californian broke Little for a 6-5 second-set lead and held serve in the ensuing game to close out the match and pull the Longhorns within 2-1.
Baylor's 12th-ranked Juan Benitez took the first set from Harrison Scott at first singles, 6-3. Scott broke Benitez in the second set for a 2-0 lead and later led 5-4, but Benitez took the final three games to close out the match and give the Bears a 3-1 cushion.
UT freshman Yuya Ito took on Baylor's Johannes Schretter at third singles and dropped the first set, 6-4 before overpowering Schretter in the second set on his way to a 6-1 win. Schretter, however, yielded nothing in the final set and prevailed 6-0 to close out his win and a match victory for Baylor. The remaining courts were suspended.
Texas hosts Texas Tech on Senior Day this weekend at Caswell Tennis Center. First serve is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. CT
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
We had a terrible start in doubles, and to me it set the tone for the match. I was really disappointed to lose serve on all three counts and go down a break. That put us in a hole right out of the gate not only on the scoreboard, but it just put us behind the 8-ball. We came back and had a chance at one doubles and we were on-serve at three. I thought we were playing better, but you can't give up those breaks and expect to win the doubles point. I was pretty disappointed. We had some chances in singles. We knew it would be tough at some spots, but we didn't execute well enough on some of the big points tonight. We never really grabbed the momentum and were just fighting uphill all night.
