Longhorns avenge last year’s loss in Lubbock, await TCU in regular-season finale next Saturday in Fort Worth.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 8 Texas (19-6, 2-2 Big 12) won two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and added three singles victories in a 4-1 win over No. 44 Texas Tech (10-14, 0-4 Big 12) Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Caswell Tennis Center.
Texas won matches at the second and third doubles positions to nail down the doubles point. Freshman Christian Sigsgaard joined sophomore Colin Markes to post a 6-2 win over Tech's Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura at second doubles.
The Red Raiders rebounded with a 6-3 win at first doubles, but UT sophomores Rodrigo Banzer and Harrison Scott closed out the doubles session with a 6-3 win over Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya at the third position to give the Horns a 1-0 match lead.
Texas Tech won three first sets, but Texas matched the Red Raiders and thwarted any hopes of a rally. Banzer finished off DiLaura by a 7-5, 6-1 count at fifth singles to stake the Horns to a 2-0 lead. Sigsgaard gave Texas a 3-0 lead behind his 6-4, 6-2 win over the 85th-ranked Bjorn Thomson at second singles.
Texas Tech registered a straight-sets win at the fourth position, but UT's Scott rallied from a second-set setback to finish off the 33rd-ranked Cailleau at first singles. After splitting the first two sets, Scott broke Cailleau right away in the third set and raced out to a 4-0 lead. Scott held on for a 6-2 third-set win to close out Cailleau and the Red Raiders. The remaining courts were suspended.
Texas closes out the regular season a week from today at No. 9 TCU.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
On the impact of Texas seniors George Goldhoff and William Jou upon the program
William hasn't played as much as some of the other guys, but he's one of the few kids that's come in here who hasn't played but has never complained one day. He works his tail off every single day and does everything he can to help the team. I can't say enough about him as a person. He's the kind of guy that if you have a daughter, you'd want them to bring William Jou home to meet you.
George has been a warrior for us. He looked at me today and said, "Can you believe that we've made it to Senior Day together?" It's been an amazing little journey that he's been on, and there's been some ups and downs. But, the one thing that you know about George is his heart and determination. He showed a lot of that today.
On Texas winning the doubles point: I thought that we did a better job of taking the middle of the court away, and we had our guys at the net helping his partner hold serve. We've been getting broken too much, and I just thought that we were a little bit more aggressive and made some plays when we really needed to. That was a big point for us, because when we got that point I thought that we had a lot of pressure on Texas Tech at that point.
