Freshman outfielder powered Texas to a sweep of Texas Tech by hitting .467 with four key RBIs
AUSTIN, Texas – As a result of her tremendous weekend at the plate during Texas softball's road sweep of Texas Tech (April 13-15), freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Washington has been selected as the Big 12 Conference's Player of the Week for April 18.
The award marks the first league accolade of Washington's career on the Forty Acres and the second weekly honor for the Longhorns in 2017 after senior Tiarra Davis' previous nod as the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week back on February 28.
The Humble, Texas, product led the way for the Burnt Orange & White against the Red Raiders by hitting at a .467 clip (7-for-15) with two runs scored, three doubles and four RBIs. During UT's marathon, 14-inning win over TTU in the series opener on April 13, Washington managed a career-high three hits and two doubles. In that contest, she knocked in a vital run during the second frame as the teams eventually ventured to the 14th inning locked at 1-1. Washington later christened UT's decisive three-run, extra-inning outburst with a lead-off two-bagger to right center starting the 14th. She continued her impressive production through the next two games at Texas Tech, going 2-for-4 during Friday's triumph before concluding her weekend on Saturday with a 2-for-5 performance, a double and a career-high three RBIs.
Washington and her Texas teammates return to action on Wed., April 19, by hosting Texas Southern at Red & Charline McCombs Field at 5 p.m. CT. The contest will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network with Tyler Denning and Megan Willis on the call.
