Junior RHP Teagan Kavan tossed a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Highlighted by junior RHP Teagan Kavan's two-hit shutout, No. 5 Texas Softball downed Ole Miss, 6-0, Thursday evening at John Cropp Stadium to advance to the SEC Tournament semifinals for the second-consecutive year.
Texas improves to 40-10 overall while claiming its fourth win against Ole Miss this season. The Longhorns improved to 2-1 all-time at the SEC Tournament. Texas has seven-consecutive 40-win seasons under head coach Mike White (not including COVID-19 shortened 2020 season), which doubles as the longest streak in program history. The Longhorns have amassed at least 40 wins in every season under White.
Kavan twirled her third complete game shutout of the season. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native struck out nine batters across 7.0 innings and worked around one walk. Kavan struck out the side twice (first and fifth innings) and began the game with four-straight punchouts. Kavan retired each of the first six batters she faced before giving up back-to-back singles in the third. Kavan then stranded both runners after recording a strikeout and forcing a pop up to freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols. Kavan has a team-high 14 complete games. Kavan has not given up more than two runs in each of her last 34.2 innings in the circle.
The Longhorns outhit the Rebels at a 6-2 clip. Senior Leighann Goode hit a solo home run to left center in the second to put Texas in front 1-0. It was her 10th home run of the season, becoming the fourth Longhorn to reach double-digit home runs.
Junior shortstop Viviana Martinez drove in two runs on her one-out, chopping single through the right side in the third to increase UT's lead to 3-0. A few pitches later, Martinez stole second base and forced an Ole Miss error on a muffed throw that allowed junior first baseman Katie Stewart to score from third base for a 4-0 lead.
Texas added two more runs in the fifth when senior pinch hitter Kaydee Bennett barreled a bases-loaded, two-out double to the left center gap to score senior catcher Reese Atwood and Goode.
Junior center fielder Kayden Henry collected her team-leading 20th multi-hit game of the season after going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Nichols went 1-for-3 at the plate with a single up the middle.
