Texas takes part in a pair of events this week after finishing a strong opening weekend of competition. UT junior Harrison Scott heads west to compete in the 32-player singles draw at the Oracle ITA Masters, and four other Longhorns are off to Louisiana for the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic.
Scott has been awarded the sixth seed in the men's singles draw and will take on Tim Handel of Northern Arizona in the first round on Thursday (start time TBD). The Canadian competes in his first event of the fall after producing a strong sophomore campaign that yielded the 36th spot in the final ITA singles rankings.
Juniors Leonardo Telles and Rodrigo Banzer will see their first tournament action of the fall. Telles brings a No. 86 national singles ranking into his second season with the Longhorns. Banzer, a Davis Cup veteran for his native Bolivia, returns after posting an impressive 18-5 dual-match record as a sophomore.
PRE-TOURNAMENT COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
On Harrison Scott competing at this week's Oracle ITA Masters
Harrison continues to improve his overall game. He looks stronger to me. He's more capable of coming forward and finishing more balls at the net. Harrison has always been able to hit the ball big from the back of the court. And, he moves much better than you'd expect for a guy his size. He's actually a very good athlete. I expect Harrison to continue to improve and we'll see where it takes him. I'm excited to see what he's capable of doing this year.
On the Cajun Tennis Classic
This tournament has a really good field. They always have some SEC schools there, some Texas schools there. It's a good challenge. You'll have to play tough to win the singles draw at this event. Harrison played really tough tennis there last year, beat a top-20 player and won the tournament. We're taking some of the guys who played in Midland and then some others, like Leo (Telles) and Rodrigo (Banzer), who will play their first event of the year. We're just trying each week to improve and see what we can do day to day.
