STILLWATER, Okla. – Junior guard Eric Davis Jr. recorded a team-high 18 points, but Texas Men's Basketball fell to Oklahoma State after a late Cowboy run, 65-64, at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday afternoon. OSU's Tavarius Shine converted a tip-in with just six seconds remaining that proved to be the game-winning basket.
Davis was 7-of-10 from the field and matched a season high with four 3-pointers while adding four rebounds. Freshman forward Mohamed Bamba registered his seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while junior forward Dylan Osetkowski added 12 points and nine boards. Freshman forward Jericho Sims brought down a career-high nine rebounds and scored five points in 28 minutes, while freshman Matt Coleman finished with nine points, five assists and two rebounds.
Texas outrebounded OSU, 41-28, and limited the Cowboys to 3-of-10 shooting from three-point range.
The Longhorns held an early 11-10 lead at the 12:45 mark, after Sims deflected a Cowboy pass and finished a dunk in the open court. Five straight points from Davis gave UT a slim three-point (16-13) margin with 8:53 remaining in the first half.
Oklahoma State knocked down a pair of free throws to even the contest at 19, but Davis responded with two 3-pointers to build a six-point (25-19) advantage for the Longhorns with 5:22 to play in the first half. A two-minute scoreless drought for UT aided an OSU spurt that trimmed the Texas lead to just 27-25 at the 2:23 mark.
Sophomore guard Jacob Young recorded three late points, and Coleman finished a layup to beat the buzzer as the Longhorns headed to halftime with a 32-25 lead. Texas held the Cowboys scoreless for the final 2:23 of the first half. Davis recorded 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the opening 20 minutes, including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point line, and Texas shot 45 percent (5-11) from behind the arc.
Bamba connected from close range and then knocked down a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to stretch the Longhorn lead to double digits (38-28) early in the second half. Oklahoma State was forced to call a timeout with 14:05 remaining after a put-back dunk from Bamba gave UT a 45-33 lead.
OSU trimmed the Texas lead to eight (58-50) at the 7:00 mark, but Davis responded with a 3-pointer on the opposite end for his first points of the second half. Oklahoma State grabbed a 63-62 advantage with 3:08 remaining after a 13-0 run over a three-minute stretch. Osetkowski connected on a runner in the lane as UT regained the lead (64-63) at the 1:50 mark.
That set the stage for Shine's game-winning tip-in with six seconds left. UT missed a deep 3-point attempt on the opposite end in the final seconds. Jeffrey Carroll paced Oklahoma State with 17 points.
Texas returns to the Erwin Center to host No. 8/8 Texas Tech on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. Central, and the contest will be nationally televised on Longhorn Network.

Postgame Quotes
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton
On the stress of comeback victories at home
"I don't think anybody has more stress than I do, but we'll certainly take it. I'm really proud of our fight. That's what I was talking about the past couple of days. I think my word choice kind of went a different route than what it should be, and that's on me. I have to be smarter than that, but at the same time, my kids got the message and I knew they would because they're good kids. They know I love them, care about them and I'm proud of the way they fought today."
On Jeffrey Carroll's performance
"He led us in deflections. I think we had 17 deflections tonight, and he had like nine of them. He was really active and he was really dialed in. The kids did all of the right things. All of the things that this team has gone through, he has continued to listen and try to learn and get better. He's a microcosm of what this team about as fighters."
On what he told the team when down 12 with less than six minutes remaining
"Just to keep fighting. Don't worry about the score and just keep swinging. Keep believing that what we do works. We needed to get a couple of easy baskets, and our defense gave us that opportunity to get out in transition. We were able to finish it with a tip-in layup - a hustle play."
On the final sequence
"We got what we wanted. We wanted to get Jeff an opportunity to drive and tried to space the floor a little bit to move (Mohamed) Bamba out of the paint. He was still in there, but (Carroll's) drive was so aggressive that it caused some confusion. Then Yankuba (Sima) comes up with a big offensive rebound because Bamba went to try and alter his shot. That's one of the downfalls of going to block his shot, because he couldn't rebound at the same time. We just continued to hustle and fight for it and came up with a big tip-in by (Tavarius) Shine."
On Texas' size disrupting rhythm offensively
"One of the crazy things that I thought we did a really good job of was that we only took 10 3's. That may be the lowest number we've shot all year, and I thought we were going to have to come out here and make 10 to have a chance to win. Our team was really disciplined at trying to attack them, even against their size advantage. We got to the free-throw line and again made a high percentage of them. The best thing we did was take care of the basketball and limited turnovers in the second half.
OSU guard Tavarius Shine
On his last shot to win the game
"I just know I was trying to get to the glass. When Yakuba grabbed the rebound, I was screaming his name. I realized he didn't hear me because he didn't look back. I saw him do a hook shot and when I saw it go short, I tried to get it up to the rim. I was hoping it would go in."
On missing a game and being back today
"I felt kind of weird. My judgment and my shots were a little off. But it just takes a little time. My shot didn't feel too bad. I felt like my direction was good."
On Boyton's motivational comments after Kansas State game
"You have to take it and run with it. I use everything he says as motivation. I don't take it to heart or let it hurt my feelings. I just use it as motivation. I think we took it well and came out gunning. It is just a word. It wasn't like he said anything about my family. It is just a word. I know Coach cares for us a lot. Like he said, he cares as much about us as he does about his kids. It's just a word to get us going, to get some flames under us and to get us competing."
On defense
"My energy came from [Averette]. He was up on the ball, so when I see him getting up on the ball handlers, that gives me the energy to lock down my guy on the wing."
On honoring Andrew Jones
"I know Andrew personally. We are from the same area and went to the same high school. I have seen him grow from not being known in basketball, to a McDonald's All-American, to basically being an NBA Draft pick. It was real big for me to see Coach Boyton and Oklahoma State University do those things for his family."
OSU guard Brandon Averette
On the final few minutes of the game
"We really just settled down and got stops on defense that led to a lot of easy buckets. I think that's what sparked our run: defense."
On Boyton's motivational comments after Kansas State game
"It made us come out and play harder. Right off the bat, you can tell that we came out with a lot more energy than we did last game."
On the last few days of practice
"We did what we always do. Compete. Work hard. It wasn't really anything significant that he changed. Just have to come out with more energy."
On the charge Lindy Waters took at the end of the game
"That was a big one. He really saved me, because I got blown by. I was happy he took that one."
On coming back from being behind
"We compete every day. We never give up until the clock says zero. We always have hope no matter what the score says."
Texas head coach Shaka Smart
On how frustrating the last five minutes was
"(It) was tough. Wish we would have had more timeouts because we obviously lost a level of poise I thought our guys showed the majority of the game. Oklahoma State deserves a lot of credit because those guys had something to do with that. They were aggressive. The officials were letting them play. And we just got a little frantic. Had some turnovers that were certainly hurtful so and even on some of the plays that we did make. Offensively we didn't finish them off. Eric had that layup, we had a couple wide open shots we didn't make. So that was the difference offensively. Down the stretch, we didn't defend nearly as well."
On playing in this league
"...I mean Oklahoma State deserves a lot of credit. I thought Carroll made some good plays down the stretch. Averette was a problem for us, and they also made some key plays not just in the last six, seven minutes but, earlier in the second half to keep them within striking distance. So you gotta take your hat off to them. "
On OSU's shooting shirts tonight
"Yeah it says a lot about Mike and his staff and their team. They gave us a ball to give to Andrew with individual, personalized messages from each guy. It really means a lot and other teams show they care a lot about Andrew. Andrew is a guy that a lot of people obviously knew about and know of as a great basketball player but now for people to care about him as a person it means a lot."
Texas guard Matt Coleman
On what he saw in the final minutes
"They just made plays. We didn't execute. They pushed us to make bad shots or force and turnover and then they came down and then they just capitalized on it."
On the OSU shooting shirts honoring their teammate:
"A lot of respect shown on their end. I really took that in consideration and that was just heartwarming just showing character on their end."
Texas forward Mo Bamba
On how it took him more time to get going:
"It was just getting used to how they were playing defense. They were denying really hard. They were denying the wings pretty hard too so it took me longer than it should have to figure out that the lane was open and I could make a play one-on-one."
