MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Freshman forward Mohamed Bamba led the Longhorns with nine points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots, but Texas Men's Basketball fell to No. 6/7 West Virginia, 86-51, on Saturday afternoon. The contest marked the third Top-20 opponent in four games for the Longhorns.
Bamba was 4-of-8 from the field in 32 minutes of work. Junior guard Kerwin Roach II matched a team high with nine points and added four boards and three assists. Sophomore guard Jacob Young also recorded nine points in 20 minutes, while junior forward Dylan Osetkowski added eight points.
The Longhorns forced WVU into 3-of-11 shooting in the opening five minutes as Texas built an early 10-6 advantage after an Eric Davis Jr. drive and lay-in. West Virginia grabbed a four-point (14-10) advantage with an 8-0 run over a 2:15 stretch, but five points from Young spurred a 10-3 run as the Longhorns regained the lead at 20-17 with 9:22 to play.
The Longhorns trailed by 10 (30-20) with 1:53 to play in the half after being held scoreless for a seven-minute period. A Bamba layup with 55 seconds ended the scoring drought, and Texas headed to halftime trailing 32-22.
Bamba led the Longhorns in the first half with six points, nine rebounds and four blocks in 18 minutes. Roach II added four points and four boards, while Young contributed five points. Texas held the Mountaineers to just 31 percent (12-of-39) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Davis Jr. knocked down a jumper on the break to trim the deficit to nine (41-32) with 16:09 remaining. Texas trailed by just an eight-point margin (45-37) after an Osetkowski jumper at the 11:32 mark, but West Virginia answered with 15 straight points to open a 60-37 cushion with seven minutes to play and never looked back. Jevon Carter paced the Mountaineers with 22 points.
Texas will return to the Frank Erwin Center to host Iowa State on Monday, Jan. 22. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. Central, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
