AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Texas guard/forward Joyner Holmes notched her first double-double of the season as No. 6 Texas Women's Basketball (16-4, 7-2 Big 12) defeated Iowa State (9-12, 3-7 Big 12), 87-55, at the Frank Erwin Center on Saturday night.
The 32-point win over Iowa State takes over as the largest margin of victory against the Cyclones. The previous high was 30 points set back in 2006.
Senior guard Ariel Atkins led the way for the Texas offense with 15 points, two assists and two steals. Senior forward Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau posted a season-high 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Holmes recorded her ninth career double-double, scoring 12 points and reeling in 11 rebounds off the bench. The Longhorns had a balanced scoring effort, as six Longhorns scored in double-figures.
The Texas offense sputtered out of the gate, highlighted by four consecutive empty possessions and two turnovers to start the game. Caron-Goudreau got the Longhorns into the scoring column with a pull-up jumper to answer a 5-0 Iowa State run. Sophomore guard Sug Sutton contributed valuable minutes off the bench early, accounting for five of Texas' 18 first quarter points.
It was a back-and-forth first half that featured nine lead changes. Holmes connected on a jump shot to give Texas a 28-26 lead, but Iowa State answered with a corner three pointer to re-claim a one-point advantage (29-28) with 4:19 left in the second quarter.
Holmes helped ignite a 11-0 Texas run after she recovered her own missed free throw, finished the layup through contact and completed the three-point play. The stifling Longhorn defense held the Cyclones to no made field goals and only one point over the remaining 4:19 of the second quarter, as the Texas headed to the locker room with a 39-30 lead.
Texas kept their foot on the gas pedal, building on their first half run with 14-straight points to start the third quarter. Texas' lead ballooned to as many as 23 (53-30) before Iowa State registered their first field goal at the 6:42 mark of the third quarter. The Longhorns only connected on one of their last nine shots to end the third quarter but still maintained a 22-point (66-44) cushion entering the final period of play.
Once again, the tenacious Texas defense was the tale of the tape, as the Longhorns held Iowa State scoreless for nearly four minutes during the fourth quarter en route to the 32-point victory.
Next, Texas will travel to Lawrence, Kan., on Wednesday, Jan. 31, to play the Kansas Jayhawks. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN3. The game will be broadcast on 105.3 FM in Austin or at texassports.com/audio.
