No. 8 Women's Basketball defeats Kansas 55-41 to sweep the series

LAWRENCE, Kan. — No. 8 Texas pulled off a road win over Kansas on Wednesday evening at Allen Fieldhouse, sweeping the 2017-18 two-game series over the Jayhawks. The 55-41 victory is the eighth Big-12 Conference win for the Longhorns this season.
Atkins led the burnt orange-and-white with 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals. McCarty totaled 14 points and matched her season high in three-pointers made with three.
Play opened at Kansas' Allen Fieldhouse with a three-pointer from the Jayhawks' Brianna Osorio. Junior Lashann Higgs quickly rallied with a jumper and a garnered a free throw off a foul from KU's Chelsea Lott. Senior Brooke McCarty hit a three, bringing the score to 8-5 as the pace of the match began to fly, pushing Texas to take quick shots in the fast-paced atmosphere. After Lott missed both of her free throws, teammate Austin Richardson's layup brought the Jayhawks within four points of Texas before the media timeout. After the short break, Texas went on a 9-0 run featuring a corner three from senior Ariel Atkins. The quarter ended 22-10.
After a jumper from Christalah Lyons that placed the scoreboard at 24-12, a scoring drought by both teams ran for over a min before sophomore Sug Sutton made a lay-up at 7:15. Almost another point-dry minute passed when Kylee Kopatich hit a jumper at 6:17. Kansas took off when they made back-to-back three-pointers, bringing the score to 29-25. The half ended 30-25, after Atkins made a free throw. The Longhorns saw their largest lead of the game (14) in the second quarter at 9:08.
Both offenses struggled after the break, as play went scoreless until 5:33, when Lyons drove the ball in for a layup. Osorio nailed a three-pointer from the wing at 4:54, tying the score for the first time at 30-30, subsequently forcing a Texas timeout. McCarty nailed a three and a layup right after the media timeout, before freshman forward Micaela Wilson put her name on the board with a three of her own. McCarty answered with another three-pointer to bring the score to 38-33. Kansas went on a mini 3-0 run, attempting to inch closer to Texas, but Holmes shut the effort down with a lay-up and free throw at 16 seconds left in the quarter. Play ended 41-36.
The Longhorns held Kansas scoreless for over five minutes during the fourth quarter en route to the 14-point victory, allowing the Jayhawks only five points in the remaining period.
Texas was 21-for-58 from the field (36.2 percent), 4-for-16 in three-pointers (25.0 percent) and 9-for-12 in free throws (75.0 percent). The Texas bench accounted for 16 points and 19 points came off of turnovers.
Lyons was a deep threat against the Longhorns, shooting 66.7 percent in three-point shots and 46.2 percent in field goals. She was the only Jayhawk player of the night to make a free throw. The junior guard ended the game with 18 points.
Next, Texas will host TCU at home in the Erwin Center on Saturday, Feb. 3. Tip-off is set for noon and the game will be televised on the Longhorn Network. The game will also be broadcast on 105.3 FM in Austin or at texassports.com/audio. Fans can gain free admission into Saturday's contest against the Horned Frogs by attending ESPN's College Game Day celebration at the Erwin Center. The televised portion will shoot at 10 a.m., but doors will open at the Erwin Center as early as 8:30 a.m. There will be free parking for the event in the Trinity Garage from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
