AUSTIN, Texas – No. 8 Texas (4-1) won the doubles point and added singles wins from juniors Rodrigo Banzer and Adrian Ortiz and sophomore Yuya Ito in a 4-1 victory over Tennessee (7-2) Sunday afternoon at Texas Tennis Center.
Texas' fifth-ranked tandem of Banzer and junior Leonardo Telles dealt Tennessee's Preston Touliatos and Adam Walton a 6-2 defeat at first doubles. The Longhorns locked up the doubles point at the third position where junior Colin Markes joined Ortiz to post a 6-3 win over Andrew Rogers and Nicaise Muamba. The remaining doubles contest was suspended given the doubles result had been decided.
Ito registered his fifth consecutive singles victory and defeated Tennessee's Luis Valero at third singles (6-1, 6-2) to give the Horns a 2-0 lead. Banzer made short work of Tennessee's Walton and staked the Horns to a 3-0 lead with his 6-2, 6-2 win.
Tennessee's Timo Stodder put the Vols on the board with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Texas' Telles at first singles, but the Longhorns' Ortiz finished off Texas' 4-1 win with his 6-3, 6-3 victory over Luca Wiedenmann at sixth singles. The remaining matches were suspended.
