PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Texas Football's Sam Ehlinger was added to the watch list for the 2018 Maxwell Award on Wednesday, announced by the Maxwell Football Club. The award honors the Player of the Year in college football.
Ehlinger has stood out for the Longhorns so far this season. He has passed for 1,499 yards and 11 touchdowns to just two interceptions. He has attempted 163 consecutive passes without throwing an interception, the longest streak in school history. He has passed for at least 200 yards in each of the first six games this season, just the fourth QB in school history to do so. In fact, Ehlinger has thrown for at least 200 yards in all 12 career starts, tied for seventh-most in school history with Vince Young.
Last week against Oklahoma, Ehlinger was 24-of-35 passing for 314 yards and two touchdowns. He added 72 yards on the ground and three more scores. In his career against the Sooners, Ehlinger has totaled 592 yards passing, 182 yards rushing and seven total touchdowns.
The list of accolades for Ehlinger have rolled in after leading the Longhorns to the 48-45 win over No. 7 Oklahoma in last weekend's AT&T Red River Showdown. He has been named Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week, Maxwell Award Player of the Week, Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week, Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week, Manning Star of the Week and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, in addition to being added to the Maxwell Award watch list today.
Ehlinger looks to add to an impressive list of Longhorn Legends to have previously won the Maxwell Award, as Tommy Nobis (1965), Ricky Williams (1998), Vince Young (2005) and Colt McCoy (2009) have all earned the award at season's end.
The Maxwell Award, which has been awarded annually since 1937, is named for Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell. His contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official.
