NEW ORLEANS, La. - Texas Longhorn quarterback Sam Ehlinger was added to the watch list for the 2018 Manning Award on Thursday. The award is sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Finalists will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 29 and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Player National Championship.
Ehlinger has stood out for the Longhorns so far this season. He has passed for 1,534 yards and 11 touchdowns to just two interceptions. He has attempted 168 consecutive passes without throwing an interception, the longest streak in school history. He passed for at least 200 yards in each of the first six games this season, becoming just the fourth QB in school history to do so. In fact, Ehlinger has thrown for at least 200 yards in 12 career games, tied for seventh-most in school history with Vince Young.
Against Oklahoma, Ehlinger was 24-of-35 passing for 314 yards and two touchdowns. He added 72 yards on the ground and three more scores. In his career against the Sooners, Ehlinger has totaled 592 yards passing, 182 yards rushing and seven total touchdowns.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
