LUBBOCK, Texas – On Thursday night in front of 2,031 fans at the John Walker Soccer Complex, a late 87th minute goal was enough to lead Texas Tech (13-4-1, 5-3-1 Big 12 Conference) to a 1-0 victory over No. 17 Texas (13-3-2, 5-3-1 Big 12 Conference) in both teams' regular-season finale.
Despite the loss, the Longhorns earned the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Big 12 Championship at the Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo., and will face No. 6 seed Kansas during Sunday quarterfinal action at 8 p.m. CT live on the Big 12 Digital Network.
The Burnt Orange & White were out-shot in the match by a 15-11 count, 7-2 in shots on goal, and were on the wrong end of an 8-2 corner kick discrepancy.
Both teams earned early corner kick opportunities, but it was Texas Tech that registered the first shot of the match as forward Jade King shot high at 7:42.
After senior midfielder Katie Glenn got the Longhorns on the board shot-wise at 10:35 on a high effort, senior defender Chelsea Surpris rattled a 25-yard blast off the top corner of the right post.
With the teams continuing the feeling-out process, Texas freshman Julia Grosso managed a pair of high shots (15:17 & 20:29), while Tech midfielder Gwennie Puente forced the first of six saves by UT junior keeper Nicole Curry.
A 27th minute cross from the right wing provided a dangerous opportunity for the Red Raiders as Charlotte Teeter had some space but popped her 12-yard volley over the bar.
Texas Tech had the better of possession down the stretch of the opening half, but Texas' defense did a solid job of blocking shots and clearing its lines.
TTU continued its pressure out of the halftime break with Ally Griffin forcing a Curry catch on a 30-yard effort just 1:04 in.
During the 52nd minute, a UT foul granted the Red Raiders a free kick about 35 yards out in the middle of the pitch. Defender Brooke Denesik stepped up and launched a shot that traveled well over the crossbar for a goal kick.
Griffin was at it again for TTU at 51:31 as a quick counter off a turnover resulted in a 11-yard shot that rolled just outside the left post.
Texas began creating some opportunities as time rolled on in the second half. First, Surpris forced a Marissa Zucchetto stop on a 30-yard shot. Then, junior forward Cyera Hintzen tried her luck from 20 yards out only to have her effort land on the top netting.
Longhorns sophomore midfielder Haley Berg got involved during the 69th minute as her shot from 13 yards out on the right side was blocked.
Perhaps UT's best scoring chance came at 81:50 as Berg made a quick turn at the top of the 18 before firing just inches over the crossbar.
After threating several times, Texas Tech finally scored the match's only goal at 86:08. Off a Texas turnover near midfield, midfielder Jayne Lydiatt delivered a perfect through ball up the middle to forward Kirsten Davis. With a step on the Longhorns backline, she raced in 1-v-1 against Curry before driving a 13-yard blast into the lower left corner to make it 1-0.
From there, the Burnt Orange & White got a wide effort from senior midfielder Kayra Dollas at the 87:22 mark, but nothing else as TTU ran out the clock.
