Senior Kerwin Roach II recorded a team-high 15 points and 5 assists to pace four Longhorns in double-figure scoring.
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Senior guard Kerwin Roach II recorded a team-high 15 points and 5 assists, but Texas (5-1) fell 78-68 to No. 11/11 Michigan State (5-1) in the championship game of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational on Friday at Orleans Arena. After knocking off No. 7/6 North Carolina on Thursday in the semifinals, the Longhorns were looking for their first back-to-back wins against AP Top 15 opponents since the 2010-11 season.
Senior forward Dylan Osetkowski registered 13 points and tied his career high with 4 steals. Sophomore guard Matt Coleman III added 13 points, while freshman forward Jaxson Hayes recorded 11 points, 3 blocks and 3 steals in 27 minutes.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 9-2 lead at the 16:11 mark of the first half. Texas extended its advantage to as much as 19 points (25-6) following a Courtney Ramey three-pointer with 11:21 remaining. The Spartans hit seven of their last nine field goals in the opening 20 minutes and trimmed the deficit to 44-36 at the break.
After Coleman opened the second half with a three-pointer to give the Longhorns a 47-36 advantage, but Michigan State responded with a 22-5 run over the next seven minutes to grab a 58-52 lead with 12:58 left. Texas closed to within 60-56 after a pair of Jericho Sims free throws at the 9:57 mark, but that was as close as the Longhorns would get the rest of the way.
