ESTERO, Fla. — Junior point guard Sug Sutton flirted with a triple-double, senior center Jatarie White contributed 16 points and seven rebounds, and freshman guard/forward Audrey Warren had a career day Saturday as the No. 10/9 Texas women's basketball team defeated Michigan, 69-52, at Hertz Arena to advance to the championship game of the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Sutton scored 13 points, brought down seven rebounds and dished out seven assists for the Longhorns, who improve to 5-0 for the fifth time in the last seven years. Warren, who earned her first career start on Saturday, scored a career-high 15 points, brought down a career-high seven rebounds, dished out a career-high three assists and had two steals in a career-high 28 minutes.
Texas used a 19-0 run throughout most of the first quarter that took it from down 6-2 to up 21-6 at the 1:53 mark of the opening period. The Longhorns led 39-14 at halftime and didn't look back. Texas led by as many as 26 points (50-24) at the 5:12 mark of the third quarter. Michigan tried to make a comeback effort in the fourth quarter, but only got as close as 13 points.
It was the first-ever meeting between Texas and Michigan in women's basketball.
KEY STATISTICS
- Texas used the starting lineup of Sug Sutton, Jada Underwood, Audrey Warren, Jatarie White and Danni Williams for the first time this season and improves to 1-0 with that starting five.
- The Longhorns and Wolverines were even on the boards at 44-44. Texas has won or tied for the rebound battle in all five games this season and 94 of the last 110 games overall.
- At least three players have scored in double figures in all five games the Longhorns have played this season.
- Sutton finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in 33 minutes.
- White, who has scored in double figures all five games this season, totaled a game-high 16 points [on 8-of-12 shooting] to go along with seven rebounds in 23 minutes.
- Warren earned her first career start and had a career day on the box score. Warren scored a career-high 15 points, brought down a career-high seven rebounds, dished out a career-high three assists and came up with two steals in a career-high 28 minutes. She also had a career-best two three-pointers.
- Senior guard Danni Williams scored eight points with a pair of three-pointers and brought down five rebounds.
- Senior forward Olamide Aborowa tied her career high with two blocked shots

"It was a great win. I thought Michigan looked really, really good against Missouri last night. For us to come out the way we did in the first half, I couldn't have been any more pleased. I did think that we got a little lackadaisical in the second, but we're talking about two games in a row. They're learning how to play through adversity and play through fatigue, and lots of young kids out there."
