UT played the majority of the match without injured Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Cyera Hintzen
AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night in NCAA First Round action at Mike A. Myers Stadium, a 67th-minute goal from Bridget Patch helped Virginia Tech (10-7-3) bring an end to No. 17 Texas soccer's (13-5-3) season, 1-0.
The Longhorns played the first 72 minutes of the match without the services of junior forward and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Cyera Hintzen, who was limited by an upper leg injury.
The Hokies out-shot the Longhorns by a 13-11 total, including 5-2 in shots on goal, and managed a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
After a lengthy feeling out process, it was Texas that managed the match's best early pressure during the 11th minute. Redshirt sophomore forward Cydney Billups made a strong run up the right wing before delivering a quality cross towards the left post. Senior forward Alexa Adams raced into the play and attempted a running volley only to have it go wide left.
Back at the other end, the Hokies managed a trio of shots of their own as Karlie Johnson (11:37), Emily Gray (13:40) and Emmalee Carter (15:57) each forced routine saves by UT junior keeper Nicole Curry.
Texas earned its first corner at the 19:59 mark with freshman midfielder Julia Grosso delivering a feed in towards the back post. After ricocheting around the 18-yard box, the ball popped out to sophomore midfielder Haley Berg who chipped a 17-yard shot over the crossbar.
Arguably the best chance for the Longhorns in the match came during the 32nd minute. A pass up field was flicked ahead by a leaping Adams inside the 18. The ball dropped right to senior midfielder Katie Glenn about seven yards out at the left post. The Round Rock, Texas, native tried for the right corner of the twine only to have Virginia Tech netminder Mandy McGlynn come up with a terrific kick save to deny an opening goal.
A UT turnover nearly cost the Burnt Orange & White during the 37th minute as Jordan Hemmen fired from 20 yards out only to have her shot blocked away and cleared.
Out of the halftime break, the Hokies continued to create opportunities as Gray launched a pair of shots over the first 1:53 of the second stanza that ventured just outside the posts.
Freshman defender Emma Regan soon made her presence felt for UT as her quick 21-yard effort from outside the top of the 18 at 48:29 was saved on a McGlynn diving stop outside of the left post.
The scoreless deadlock finally came to an end at the 66:10 mark as a Kiersten Hening pass to the right located Patch in some space just outside the top of the box. She managed to drive a shot into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Suddenly trailing on the scoreboard, the decision was made to bring a limited Hintzen into the match during the 73rd minute to try to add an offensive spark.
Unfortunately for the Longhorns, the Hokies defense kept things under control the rest of the way as UT senior midfielder Kayra Dollas managed the only shot for either team over the remainder of the contest by driving a 25-yard effort just wide right at 79:45.
