Senior guard Danni Williams paced the Longhorns with a 15-point and eight-rebound performance
AUSTIN, Texas— Senior guard Danni Williams led all scorers with a 15-point outing as No. 12 Texas (8-2) defeated Stetson (1-8), 65-46, on Sunday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. Freshman forward Charli Collier provided a solid contribution off the bench, adding 13 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, and six rebounds in the win.
Sophomore guard Destiny Littleton also scored in double-figures, contributing 10 points, four rebounds and two steals. Senior forward Jatarie White recorded eight points and seven rebounds while junior guard/forward Joyner Holmes chipped in six points and six rebounds in her first start of the season.
It was a back-and-forth first quarter that included six lead changes as the Longhorns maintained a two-point advantage (13-11) at the 3:21 mark of the first quarter. Texas' offense was held scoreless for the last 4:29 of the first quarter as Stetson tied the game (13-13). Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm as the two combined to score just eight points in the first 5:09 of the second half, but UT still led 18-16. Collier knocked down a pair of free throws as Texas ended the last 1:47 of the half on a 7-0 run. The Longhorns took an eight-point lead (27-19) into the locker room.
The Longhorns ended the third quarter by hitting three-consecutive baskets to give Texas a 12-point cushion (44-32) entering the final period of play. Texas' offense came alive in the fourth quarter as the Longhorns ended the game by connecting on eight of their last nine field goals en route to the 19-point victory.
KEY STATISTICS
- The Longhorns used the starting lineup of Holmes, White, Audrey Warren, Sug Sutton and Williams.
- Sutton set a career-high with five steals. The junior guard also added four points, three assists and three rebounds in 27 minutes of play.
- Williams led all players with a game-high 15 points and eight rebounds. This is the second-consecutive game that Williams had led the team in rebounds.
- Warren contributed seven points, five rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes of action.
- Texas' defense held Stetson to just six points in the second quarter. This marks the fifth time this season that Texas has held an opponent to six points or fewer in a quarter.
- Texas capitalized on second-chance opportunities, outscoring Stetson 14-5 in such instances.
- Texas outscored Stetson 34-16 in the paint.
