Junior guard Kerwin Roach II paced the Longhorns with 18 points.
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Five Longhorns scored in double figures, but Texas Men's Basketball fell to No. 6/6 Kansas 80-70 on Monday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
Roach II led Texas with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and matched a career high with eight assists in 38 minutes. Sophomore guard Jacob Young also matched a career high with 14 points off the bench on 6-of-13 shooting and brought down five rebounds, two assists and a career-high three steals in a career-best 36 minutes.
Junior forward Dylan Osetkowski recorded 13 points and five boards, and freshman forward Jericho Sims connected on 6-of-9 shooting from the field for 12 points to go along with his team-high eight rebounds. Freshman point guard Matt Coleman rounded out the double-figure scoring for Texas with 11 points in 28 minutes.
The Longhorns finished 29-of-68 from the field and knocked down nine 3-pointers, while the UT defense turned the Jayhawks over 13 times.
Texas grabbed a 13-11 lead after a 3-pointer from Roach II at the 14:20 mark, but Kansas used a 16-0 run over a 4:28 stretch to build a 27-13 advantage with 9:25 remaining in the half. UT responded with its own 10-2 run to pull within 29-23 at the 5:42 mark.
The Longhorns trailed by double digits (35-23) with 4:21 to play in the half after KU recorded six straight points. Young finished a layup in the open court with two seconds remaining, but Kansas connected on 4-of-5 field goals over the final 3:16 of the opening half as Texas headed to the break trailing 45-32.
Roach II paced the Longhorns with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the opening 20 minutes. Sims added six points and four boards in 18 minutes.
Young trimmed the deficit to 51-45 after knocking down a 3-pointer, but the Jayhawks recorded five straight to extend their advantage back to 11 (56-45) with 13:59 remaining.
After Texas cut the margin to eight (62-54), Kansas answered with a 7-0 run to extend its cushion to 69-54 at the 7:38 mark. Coleman connected from deep and Young finished a layup with 1:20 remaining to pull within seven (77-70), but KU recorded the final three points of the contest.
The Longhorns return to the Erwin Center to face No. 20/19 West Virginia on Saturday, March 3. Tip is set for 11 a.m. Central, and the contest will be televised on ESPN.
